The centre was established in the year 1999 after carving out from HRC, Patharchatta. The centre has about 100-acre land exclusively for seed production and to conduct research trials on different vegetable crops. In the year 2025-26 due to expansion of Pantnagar airport the Vegetable Research Centre has been shifted to new location behind Model Floriculture Centre and around 20 ha of land has been taken from Breeder Seed Production Centre. So, currently VRC has around 40 ha of land at two different locations.
The major activities are collection, evaluation and maintenance of vegetable germplasm, standardization of production and protection techniques including offseason cultivation of vegetables and organic farming of vegetable crops and breeder seed production of vegetable crops. Till date 45 varieties including 6 Hybrids and 7 Spices have been developed
